Using Storage Facilities
- Pack books flat to protect their spines. Metal items need to be cleaned and dried to prevent rust. Wrap valuables in several layers of packing material and surround them with additional protection once in the box. Pictures and mirrors should never be laid flat in a box; stand them up on the side of a box instead.
- Don’t overfill your boxes. It’s easy to fill a box to capacity without thinking about the weight of it. Never exceed the weight limit posted on the box or you risk it breaking as soon as you pick it up.
- Store clothing in wardrobe boxes, which are specially designed so that you can hang items in them directly on a hanger.
- Items that cannot be packed in boxes need to be carefully stored. Stack chairs seat to seat and cover all your furniture with dust covers. Wood furniture should be sprayed with a good quality furniture oil to protect it while in storage.
- Label each box so that you can quickly find things. Mark each side of the box as well as the top.
- When putting your boxes in storage, put the lighter ones on top and try to keep the boxes organized. Put anything you think you will want to access near the front of the unit and leave an aisle so that you can walk through to the back easily. This seems like common sense but people forget when they are anxious to get their belongings stored away.
