Decorating on A Budget – Renters Share their Thoughts

(Rate this article)

Apartments.com recently conducted a survey to current renters about decorating, ninety percent of renters will decorate when moving to a new apartment; and of these renters, eighty-one percent will decorate within the first three months of their move.

Most renters said that their biggest decorating challenge is staying within a budget (38%). Other survey respondents stated their challenges when decorating include: not having enough space (23%), need help with organization (12%) and unsure of what colors to use (12%).

In our survey, we also found that the majority of renters, sixty-five percent, plan to spend $500 or less on their decorating budget while eighteen percent of respondents will spend between $500 and $1000.

But decorating does not have to break the bank, as Eva the Shopping Diva, shopping expert and blogger from ShopLocal, offers this advice for renters decorating on a budget:

  • First try a small yet important room, like the bathroom. Simply hanging a new shower curtain with a gorgeous pattern can really change the look of the room. Add a great bath mat that compliments the pattern and a new look is born.
  • Re-covering old dining room chairs or a worn-out ottoman are easy ways to subtly change the style of a room. Select a fabulous fabric and use a staple gun to give old furniture a new life.
  • Wall decals are a snap to apply and if you get tired of them you can easily peel them off. You can get very creative with this great alternative to wallpaper.

This article was created from survey results generated by the Apartments.com What Renters Want monthly survey. If you have an idea for a survey topic, or would like to receive information on how you can make your voice heard by responding to one of our surveys, please send us an email at whatrenterswant@apartments.com.

I LIKE YOUR STUFF. Would you help me please. i’m dying for my crib to look tight.

I recently moved into a condo. The livingroom has a window that takes up almost all of one of the walls (approximately 104″ across & 64″ down). I painted this wall and the small adjoining wall a raisin color and then splattered it w/white, red and silver paint. I painted the other two larger walls white. In the window I hung vertical blinds that I painted red, raisin and white and hung a red swag sheer curtain. On the white walls I painted two frames raisin and splattered them with the colors on the small brown wall which, is directly across the room. On the white wall that is directly across from the window I hung a dark colored large mirror.

The kitchen is adjacent to the livingroom and has a counter that separates the rooms. On the front of the counter I painted red, raisin and white stripes. I painted all the walls white and painted the cabinets, stove and refrigerator red. I trimmed the outer window frame red, hung a white blind that is splattered with black and red and then laid black tile in the middle of the floor and white tiles as the outside border for the floor.

I hung a picture of red and green apples that is framed in a mahongany picture frame next to the kitchen window. Hung a lucite shelf under the picture and put red and silver canisters on it. Everything turned out beautiful.

The 3 points you have explained are very well, will surely utilize your techniques.

you can paint your walls, all leases usually states that all apearances shall be retuen to the same as move in when u move out so as long as u remember to paint them back u will be fine

You might get a wallpaper border and place it around the room. When you leave the wallpaper is easy to peel off and it is cheap. Although do not use vinyl wallpaper because it does not peel off well.
