Decorating on a Budget

(Rate this article)
  • Pick up matching soap dispensers, towels and pot holders. This is a very inexpensive way to personalize your kitchen.
  • Place a small table lamp on the counter to add a soft glow to the room.
  • Use decorative oil or vinegar bottles to add color and accent to your kitchen. You can easily make these. Try www.saveoncrafts.com for great deals on supplies. Find a bottle you like and add oil and herbs to your taste!
  • If your kitchen has a window, put up a billowy curtain to add a soft touch.

Bedroom

  • Dress up your bed by adding a headboard and/or a bed skirt. You can create a bargain headboard by buying a section of a wrought iron or a picket fence at a flea market. A bed skirt can be handmade from a sheet by cutting it using your box spring as a guide.
  • Hang plant or bicycle hooks from the ceiling and use these to hang window coverings. Add a garland or string of lights to the top of the window frame or along the curtain length.
  • Group candles in odd numbers and in a variety of sizes and heights on your dresser top or side table.
  • Mirrors, in any room, will make the room look larger.
  • Avoid cluttering your shelves with tons of tiny knick-knacks. Choose just your favorites and arrange them around the room.

Bathroom

  • Add fabric to the room by dressing up a plain white shower curtain and windows. Also cover tissue boxes and trash cans.
  • If you don’t have a cupboard under the sink, glue Velcro to the bottom of the sink and attach fabric to it to create a pretty storage area.
  • Hang ivy or floral accents around your mirror.
  • Live plants can turn a dull bathroom into a natural-looking sanctuary.
  • Display towels and toiletries in a large basket and arrange then creatively.

I would like information on how to redo an old apartment and update it, It’s a three room with bath.I want color because every room is white. My colord are like rose, burgandy, sand neutral colors I am from west africia please help

GO TO BIG LOTS WALMART DOLLARSTORES DOLLAR GENERALS GARAGESALES YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT PLACES THAT ARE NOT THAT HIGH IN PRICE THEY HAVE IT ALL

Terri

I would have to agree. The Dollar Store has lots of storage containers and inexpensive figurines and decorations. Target has lots of furniture as does Wal-Mart and KMart.

Painting over all the vintage elements is hip right now, so choose some bold colors (CAREFULLY strip off the 47 layers of paint from WWII first) and get cracking. You can also leave white as an accent on your vintage trim if you are using medium to pastel hues. It can also work with more opaque colors, too, but I’d test the individual colors first.

If your colors are rose, Burgandy, and Sand. I would do the sand for the walls it gives a warm tone and for the Living Room sofa or chairs I would do burgundy with throw pillows in rose and variety tans and accent rug underneath sofa that has colors of sand, tan, burgundy and rose your tables end table and coffee table dark woods. I would do bedroom, and Kitchen and bath different.

i would like to update my apartment (2bedroom/2bathroom)What can I do with the things that I already own? I have an olive green sofa and chaise, black leather dining room chairs with silver detail (the table is silver with a glass table top) I want to add some tables and lamps but don’t know what would go with the pieces that I already have.

Nancy

If you want to go cheap, go to a fabric store, find material that has the green, baclk and silver in the material. Make pillows for your sofa and chaise and a table runner for your glass table top. Do the runner with olive tassles. Choose glass or silver lamps that would go with your dinning room and maybe paint some old end tables black. Shabby to sheek!

KK

Burn anything Olive green.

Yes, I live in a large one bedroom apartment and the bathroom is adjacent to my room. I wanted to know if a room divider was a good idea? I want one half of the room like a study and the other half a bedroom. Any suggestions? Help???

KK

You can use a large, sturdy !stand alone! wooden shelf as a room divider. A letter-writing desk/ highboy will also work. Just have the back facing the bed and set up the other space as though your large piece of furniture were a wall, a la Christopher Lowell. Just remember to create a separate focal point in the new area. You don’t want the rest of the furniture to scream ” My bed is behind that fake wall!” You may also want to decorate the back of the unit and the bedroom side so that they aren’t screaming “There’s a large nonsensical piece of furniture facing away from the bed!”

Doreen

add olive green tp your table by making napkins and a cool napkin ring. Or you can add black to the sofa as pillows. Oh by the way you can cover lamps with cloth go to a fabric store and discover how.

Im going to move to 1 bedroom apt andmy son is 2years old how can i decorate the room.please help……..

Nancy

Split the room in half. In his half make it in shades of blue with little boy bedding. In your half, shades of blue for a grown-up. Twin beds, etc. Use a screen to divide the room in half if possible.
Or be creative and hang some beautiful material the length of the room. He will have his half, you will have yours. Put dressers in the closet if the closet is large enough, or if it’s a walk in, put his room in there…..

need help! just moved in a basement apartment, 2 bedrooms and i have no clue how to make it look cozy oplease help! i am a 22 yearold mother from chicago!!my favorite colors are reds,, browns orange!!

Amy

Hi there. I don’t know if you’ve already gotten some suggestions. I will tell you to paint the walls WHITE. ESPECIALLY in the basement. BE SURE for #1 you keep all exits to windows EASILY accessible in case of fire. I lived in a basement apartment and REALLY had to push the landlord to create safe exits. Then, use carpets that you can buy at Wal-Mart that are for large areas to “create” an intimate seating area. Purchase chairs in similar colours/fabrics at sales or Wal-Mart, flea markets and a table in the middle of them approx. 2/3 the size of the “intimate seating area”. Keep CLUTTER LIMITED.

kina

one word girl….IKEA….very inexpensive..

KK

First of all, make the ceilings look as high as possible so you can forget you’re in a basement. Try leaving it beige or eggshell (Dammit if it’s popcorn!) and chosing a contrasting color for the trim or have someone add some ‘crown molding.’ Do the walls in soothing, but non-absorbent colors like medium to light blue/green. You can also use a more opaque color or one with a lower reflective value, but you may loose light and be stuck back in the basement again.

Thanks for your decorating advice especially when it comes to what to put where since I will have to go on a major shopping spree from the furniture down to the knick knacks to put in ithe rooms since where I presently live has nothing of this type. Sincerely yours, MArsha Melder

I am 53 yrs and i am moving into a apartment with 3 picture windows what should i do to the windows(have blinds hanging pervided by landperson)I am not a mperson that sleeps in total darkness so how do I light the rooms without letting the out doors know?(first floor parking lot)Ny door is the first one you come in toon the first floor Can I put a patishion up in front of the door ro shut out noise? Wish me luck I really love the aparetment.

nancy

You can buy film to put over your windows so you can see out, but people can’t see in.
Or measure the windows in half or 3/4 and hang curtains just that high. No one can see in and you still will get light.Check with your landlord on getting a thicker door which would muffle the sound.

KK

See if you can get your landlord to get rid of the blinds (this can be a code violation in some states, depending on apartment size). Otherwise, hang your window treatments as though the hidious mini-blinds weren’t there and never use them. Otherwise,it will still feel like a starter apartment, and who wants that at 56? There are also “stained glass” window clingies. These are magnetic, like a lot of newer car window stickers and don’t leave a residue. You can place them on the bottom window. The designs tend to be rather simple and convincing though, so I’d check for a “frosted glass” version.

I’m 19yrs old and moving to San Diego to live with my boyfriend this year in our first apartment. I’m not sure on the rules for painting yet but I have an idea to brighten up walls that can’t be painted.

I’m going to pick up some fabric from either a vintage store or fabric store (obiviously) and use it as a backdrop behind my sofa. It will hang with the eyehole type screws from the ceiling flush with the wall then i will attach string or wire of some sort to each screw and have clips (the normal hooks that go on any curtain rod with clips attached to them) to hold on to the fabric. This can’t be done if the fabric is too heavy and is not for a rug of course but it’s a cheap way to create a focal point in a livingroom or to help create a divider between the entertainment area and the study area.

Another idea is to fasten hooks to the back of realatively light picture frames and hang them down from the ceiling (i’m going to use some type of chain) in front of the backdrop. This breaks up the solid piece of fabric hanging on the wall and at the same time looks unique and uncluttered.

I am moving again, and have recently bought a semi-expensive tapestry. How do I go about hanging it on a wall without totally ruining it?

kina

hurcules hooks hold up to 100lbs.and only leaving a pin hole!!!

KK

Have it framed. PROPERLY. The setting should be absolutely acid-free, among other things. Check with an expert or look-up tapestry/ fabric preservation online. I have a feeling that hermitically sealing it is bad for it too- it may leave it vulnerable to damage when removed from the sealed environment.
Once it’s framed, you can hang it like a picture!

What are some good ideas to decorate a big BAY window.

Greetings!

I thought I would suggest a really good and inexpensive resource for decorating your home…Michael’s Arts & Craft store. You can find them at www.Michaels.com where they have lots of ideas AND they have a store locator.

If you don’t fancy yourself a very creative person, then they have plenty of inexpensive classes you can take to learn a new craft.

Hope this helps!

Cheryl–about the tapestry–I think tacking a few clothespins to the wall in a horizontal straight line at the level where you want the top of the tapestry to be, and then hanging the tapestry from them, ought to be safe. Plain wood clothespins should look all right if the room has a “natural” look overall, or you could paint them (and let them dry VERY well) to match the room first. The hard part would be getting the clothespins onto the wall in the first place…probably involving a very small hammer and putting the tack or nail in at an angle. (And of course the toothpaste trick on the holes, when you leave that apartment.)

i need alot of help b/c it’s just completely plan in my apartment. my colors are black/gold. can someone please give me some ideas???

Nancy

I have black and gold and I have dressed it up with a black throw and some red and gold plaid pillows. Purchased at Penneys and the pillow add color and warmth to the whole room. I also have a red vase with twigs and a minature flower arrangement of dark reds. Find fabic with all the colors and make pillows, or a wall hanging behind the couch, just cover a large board, or if you have a picture you don’t like, cover it with material. Works great!

KK

Use them as accents only! Beige or ivory makes a great backdrop.

i’m a parapalegic how cani reach thing in coppurds and take a bath? do you have any handicap apt? lisa

Rich Bruno

Lisa, check out drleonards.com. It is a website for the elderly, but it also has ideas for those hard to reach items that are high up. I am thinking of the Grabber. It is essentially a long pole with 2 pivoting suction cups on the ends to grab what you cannot reach.

my bed room is so plain and I just moved in there. Ihave absolutely nothing but my clothing how would you help me?

nancy

Hit garage sales, make rounds on trash day, another persons trash is someone elses treasures. His the salvation army, consignment shops, look at different webs sites in your area for people who want to give away free stuff just to get rid of it. Ask you family and friends for anything they don’t want. Most have something to throw out or would be willing to help. It’s fun trying to get that certain look for very little. Also watch for stores going out of business.

I love this web site. I watch hgtv all the time and I get a lot of decoratine idea’s. also, design of a dime .,great show. My colors are reds/choc brown/teal these colors go great together. Ikea sells the curtain wire to hang those curtains the basement.

Ana

My daughter and I live on a limited income that is less per month than what most make in a week, but everyone that enters our home is in awe of my decor. The secret is Salvation Army Thrift Stores and Goodwill. Not only do they have great decorating items for very little money, but you are helping some TERRIFIC charities when you buy. Get an idea of what you like, most of us know our fav. colors but decorating is more than that. I love nature so I decorate with a lot of wood, rock, wicker elements and warm earthtone colors. I also love baskets, you can do so much with them and second hand ones are cheap!

MME

I am moving to an 2 bedroom house that don’t have a lot of closet space. I will be living out of boxes for my clothes. What can I do to eliminate having my house. the house is very nice. the basement is unfinish, but nice and clean but no shelves or storage space either. What can I do? Use most of my money to buy the house so I am have a little to make space. Very deseparte to know before XMAS.

Nancy

Several ideas..cheapest…hang a piece of clothes line across one end of your room and hang clothes on there. Cover with some inexpensive pretty material until better comes along. Turn the boxes on their side stack and use them as drawers. This saves money and you can glance and see what is in each one. Later purchase inexpensive furniture or watch ads for people that want to give stuff away free to get rid of it. If a drawer is broken or missing, take it and just leave it open and stack the clothes inside.

The rental house we live in has OLD hardwood floors. Besides sanding and staining does anyone have ideas on how to spruce them up. We are not allowed to paint them.
Also, the fireplace stone is old gray stone, very dirty. We scrubbed it but want to paint it. Any ideas?
Nancy

You can get several different products at a hardware store for resorting wood. You wipe on a liquid, let it dry and then put on a wax floor polish with a soft white cloth mop - it gives a beautiful sheen to the floor and should restore it like new. If there are marks on the floor before you start you can use fine steel wool to remove them or even a green scrubber if they are not too bad. Then put your floor products on. Good luck.

i am in the process of moving to a 2bd/1ba. it’ll be 1005 sq ft. does anyone have any ideas on how i can make each room full, without being very cluttered. i also currently have a red, ivory, black theme going on in the living room, is it a good idea to carry it over to the dining as well? and my bed and bath room’s are lilac, ivory, and green. should i have a better choice of colors, judging from the front of the apt? THANKS for the help and advice!

HELP! I moved to NY to live close to my BF, he rented me a basement apartment…and I wanna cry! It’s actually pretty spacious but so narrow that I’m having trouble getting creative…I used to live in my 3bd/3ba 2 story condo with views of the lake and mountains….no I don’t even have a real window…please give some decorating advice…thanks…

Chana

Colors will be very important in bringing to life your space. Mirrors on walls and basket will help to create a warm environment. You’d be surprised what kind a great inexpensive things you can find a Value City. And you can even take a picture of a window or the outdoors from somewhere like Ross or AJWright, put it on a wall and create the illusion of a curtain/window scene. I think something bright and warm like a light sage green, sandle apricot or something like that will help to bring the place to life.

Hi, some real good basic ideas in that article.Remember, that old household things and furniture, can be repainted, covered in fabric, etc and transformed into something new. Trendy decorating is expensive. Use basics around your home to create a current look. Nothing is more frustrating then wanting to redecorate and realize you just spent lots of money 6 months to a year ago. Hint: go to Freecycle.org and find your areas group, for completely “free” stuff, and then go to a craft store. My thought, “Their old can be your new”.. Ciao for now Mb:-)
