Unique Uses for Your Old Stuff

(Rate this article)

You don’t have to be super crafty to turn “junk” into treasure. Help the environment and save a couple bucks with this fun list of “things” that can be used for other “things”.

Bottle Caps:

  • Paint them red and black to replace missing checkers.

CDs/Records:

  • Paint/decorate them and use them as coasters.
  • Purchase a clock mechanism (about $10 at craft stores) and create beautiful clocks by adding your own decorative touches.

Egg Cartons:

  • They make great packing material.
  • Cut off the tops and use them to store jewelry in a drawer.
  • Keep one in your desk drawer to hold small items.
  • Use them to store golf balls.

Film Canisters:

  • Fill them with quarters, safety pins, bobby pins or other small items.
  • Put some of your medication in one and use as a travel holder.

Glass Jars:

  • Make holiday gifts by putting homemade candy or cookies inside.
  • Make bookends or lamps by filling the jars with colored water and layers of sand or shells.
  • Store cereals, grains or baking ingredients in them, or use them for storing jelly or sauces.

Ice cream containers:

  • Use them for a holder for a silk flower arrangement.
  • Use as a bath basket for soap, hand towels, etc.
  • Use them as a pot for an indoor garden.
  • Organize your junk drawers and closets and use these as bins.

Milk Crates:

  • They can make great cheap coffee tables and footrests, especially when covered with a pretty cloth.
  • Stack several together to create a storage system.
  • Make one into a fun pet cave your cat or dog will love.
  • Use one as a car kit, filled with emergency equipment, a blanket and some small games or books.
  • Fill one with files to create a handy file folder case.
  • Use one to store donations for those in need.

**Big issues with two tips**:

NEVER EVER travel with medication in film canisters! If you were to become unconcious for any reason by yourself, it can be very helpful to EMT and Doctors to be able to identify any medications you have on you immediately. It can be the difference between life and death sometimes. Also, unidentified medications can get you into BIG BIG trouble with authorities sometimes.

Also, it’s not safe to use toilet paper or paper towel roll holders with extension cords. Its really not helpful in the event of an electric fire. They burn up mighty quick, and can also help to begin one.

Other than that, bravo on the other ideas.

The article says to store the cords in the toilet paper holder, not keep them on the wires when you have them plugged in… That’s a very bad thing…

It is against the law to store prescription Meds in unmarked containers.
