Party Planning Problems SOLVED!
Dear Apartments.com,
Last week I threw a last-minute party for a friend who was promoted at work. I invited our mutual friends and told her to invite the friends or co-workers she wanted. I have known her for years and thought I could trust her judgment. The guests were fine for awhile but soon started guzzling my homemade sangria like fish and got very rowdy. Rowdy was enough to annoy the neighbors who had management call me and ask me to quiet down. I tried to politely ask them to leave but they proceeded to get downright rude. Suddenly, a fight broke out between two of the co-workers and as we tried to break it up a hole was knocked in the bedroom door and some of the paint was scratched off the walls. I’ve tried to repair the damage but it looks awful. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Damaged in Dobson, North Carolina
Dear Damaged,
Anytime you have a party when you invite people you don’t know, you’re running the risk of something like this happening. It’s sad but true. The first thing you’re going to have to do is let your landlord know. You can explain exactly what happened and that you’re completely prepared to pay for the damages (the cost to fix this may or may not be less than your security deposit, regardless, it is your responsibility to make amends). Explain that you’re already tried to repair the damage but it’s still obvious. Your landlord will appreciate your honesty. If the cost to repair the wall is steep, you might want to approach your friend. If you’ve known her for a while and you’re close, she may be able to help you contact the person responsible for the damage so that you may seek restitution. Take a photograph of the damage for your records as well as document all conversations as a matter of record. If the person responsible is still rude, even without the influence of the sangria, you may want to contact your local city government on how to approach a small claims court. It’s up to you if the trouble is worth it. You may want to just chalk this up to a lesson learned.
Good luck!
