The Basics of Window Box Gardening
When winter comes, depending on the climate, you can maintain your window box if you make a few smart choices:
Southernliving.com recommends choosing a focal point plant, such as a pyramid-shaped boxwood, and surrounding it with paperwhites and flowering cabbages or another stand-out plant.
You may want to choose holiday-colored foliage for a festive look as well.
If you transplant flowers from the ground, be sure to loosen the roots and allow excess potting soil to fall away.
In the very cold months, you will need to remove the dead foliage and be ready to begin again in the spring.
Best window box choices (organicgardening.com):
Herbs Vegetables
Oregano Cherry tomatoes
Parsley Lettuce
Rosemary Peppers
Thyme Swiss chard
For the vegetable lover, suite101.com (http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/container_gardening_retired/32565) has a list of newly-bred veggies that are sized just right for small planters. You can choose from favorites like beans, broccoli, carrots, and cucumbers, all in miniature versions.
Experimenting with new plants each year is a great way to keep yourself challenged as a gardener and keep your neighbors wondering what will be budding next!
