Pepper – Although inhaling a handful of this herb will cause itching and sneezing, application of the essential oil can eliminate a toothache. Taken alone or with a combination of other spices, pepper can treat nausea, gas, bloating and constipation.
Rose – Rose petals can actually reduce high cholesterol levels. Rosewater, a mild astringent, can be used as a facial cleanser as well as in compresses for sore eyes.
Sage – Oil of sage is a common ingredient in anti-perspirants as sage naturally inhibits the sweat glands. The leaves of the sage plant are an effective treatment against cold and flu and when ingested, can also help alleviate the pain of sore throats.
Sandalwood – Since around 500 AD, sandalwood has been used as a natural treatment for gonorrhea. A paste made from the wood of this plant has also been used to soothe skin irritations and rashes. Additionally, it can be used in the treatment of chest or abdominal pain.
Saw Palmetto – The berry of the saw palmetto is used primarily to treat urinary tract infections and for enlarged prostate glands.
Sesame – Sesame oil is a wonderful restorative for dry skin. The seeds will help aid constipation and can also be used in larger quantities for dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision and upper respiratory problems such as cough or asthma.
St Johns Wort – A strong anti-depressant and pain reliever, St Johns Wort is commonly used to dispel premenstrual symptoms. The oil can also be applied topically for arthritis, bruises, sprains and varicose veins.
Tarragon – There is a myth that tarragon can cure snake bite. Whether this is true or not is not known, however, we do know that it can be used to aid digestion and as a mild sedative, it can promote a good night’s sleep. The root of the tarragon plant has been used to relieve toothaches.
Tea Tree – A strong anti-bacterial agent and astringent, tea tree oil is an amazing quick cure for acne breakouts. It can be applied directly to stings, burns and cuts to kill infections and reduce pain and swelling.
Thyme – A main ingredient in mouth washes and vapor rubs, thyme, and it component thymol, is a medicinal treatment for coughs and congestion.
Turmeric – A bright yellow herb, common in Indian delicacies, turmeric has been known to help reduce cholesterol levels and was used in ancient times to treat stomach and liver disease.
