Calendula (Also commonly known as marigold.) – Very popular in the cosmetic industry, calendula petals are an active ingredient in many skin creams and cleansers. Along with its aesthetic properties, calendula has been known to aid in the healing process, fight fungal infections, decrease inflammation due to sprains, cure diaper rash, and soothe burns, sunburns and other skin irritations. Camphor – Mostly used topically, camphor oil and crystals have strong antiseptic, antispasmodic and stimulating properties. Camphor is the main ingredient in many arthritis creams and lotions sold commercially for joint and muscle pain. It can also be used as a remedy for cold sores. Camphor also has an expectorant property and thusly can be used topically as a chest rub for the relief of congestion, cough, bronchitis and other chest infections.

Chicory – No, it’s not only a type of coffee in the South, Chicory root is also an anti-inflammatory agent and has been known to settle upset stomachs. It is an anti-inflammatory and a cleanser. It can be taken as a mild laxative and is also helpful in the treatment of gout and other rheumatic conditions.

Cinnamon – This stimulating spice helps alleviate stomach pains and cramping. It is also an antiseptic and anti-viral herb that has been used for curing the common cold and flu.

Clary Sage – Clary sage is similar, but not the same, to its close relative, sage. Clary sage is a bit milder than sage but because of its anti-spasmodic, astringent, antiseptic and aromatic properties, it is used in the treatment of gas and indigestion. Topically, it can be used to treat eye infections. Clary sage can also stimulate estrogen and as a result is effective in the treatment of menstrual pain and premenstrual conditions.
