Proper Etiquette at the Gym

(Rate this article)

When you’re done using a piece of equipment put it back the way that you found it. If you use any equipment that belongs to the gym (jump rope, exercise ball, free weights, etc.) don’t leave them lying around. This is a safety hazard and just plain poor form. Put things back where you found them. This rule extends way beyond the gym, clean up after yourself in the bathroom. Don’t leave messes in any public places for that matter. This includes balls of hair in the shower, flushing the toilet and picking up your towels when you’re finished with them.

If you use one of the weight machines, before you finish, put the weight level down to the lowest for the next person.
If you’re doing heavy weight lifting, don’t drop the weights heavily on the floor when you’re done. It’s a safety precaution for you and for everyone around you. If you lift to the point of exhaustion, make sure you have a spotter to help you.

Don’t dress to impress. Because what you might think is impressive might just give off the opposite effect. You’re there to work out. Let’s face it, sure, there’s some meeting and mingling going on in the gym, but honestly, you’re there, sweating, stinking and grunting (not too loudly of course) and you’re probably not at the most attractive you can possibly be. Be comfortable and be conscientious of the amount of skin you’re exposing. No matter what you do, do NOT douse yourself with cologne or perfume before your workout. Strong smells are not attractive in any situation, least of all when you, and everyone around you, is sweating and breathing deeply.

If you’re taking an exercise class, show up early or on time. By coming in late, you’re interrupting others in the class, especially if it’s a crowded class and room needs to be made for you.

As in all social situations, really, all you need to do is use common sense and follow the golden rule. Treat others the way you would like to be treated and act the way you would like others to act around you. It’s pretty simple.
