45 Easy Ways to Economize At Home Every Day

(Rate this article)

25. Avoid spending on ‘throwaway’ items such as disposable razors, flashlights, pens, toothbrushes, paper cups & plates, diapers, cigarette lighters, etc.

26. For parties, use reusable plates, cups, glasses, utensils, napkins-instead of expensive paper and plastic disposables.

27. Pay credit card charges when they become due so interest isn’t added.

28. When buying big-ticket items, learn all about them from consumer magazines and guides before you buy. You will be less apt to make a bad choice.

29. Garage sales and flea markets are excellent for both selling and buying.

30. Start your children earning money at an early age.

31. When buying insurance, pay the premium annually. It’s less expensive in the long run than paying monthly, quarterly or even semi-annually.

32. Check all monthly bills closely, including your bank balance. Big companies can and do make mistakes.

33. Examine your check at restaurants to make sure no error has been made.

34. Buy things out of season for big savings, like after Christmas.

35. Grow your own herbs and spices in window-sill flower pots.

36. Coffee is expensive. Brew only as much as your family will drink.

37. Save and sell recyclable materials such as aluminum, paper, etc.

38. Bread becomes stale more quickly in the refrigerator. Store it at room temperature or in the freezer.

39. Learn about auto upkeep and how to do minor repairs yourself.

40. Instead of buying gorgeous house plants, get cuttings from friends.

41. If you need a lawyer, carefully investigate his fees in advance.

42. Be wary of banking gimmicks. Be sure you get the best deal in town.

43. Shop at discount and variety stores for biggest savings on cosmetics.

44. Dilute your shampoo with small amount of water - for easier rinsing.

45. Before buying anything new, ask yourself if you really need it.

49) Don’t forget about coupons and trying to use them when items are already on sale. It’s extra savings.
50) When you’re away from home for an extended period, unplug the appliances that you can.

If you put shampoo and conditioner in pump bottles and use only three squirts of each to wash your hair it lasts forever! I’ve been using the same bottle of shampoo for over two months.

WD-40, (Water Displacement formula 40), was designed to repel water. It has many uses from silencing sqeaks to getting soap scum off walls and glass shower stalls. Just spray it on, and water spots are gone. Also defoggs the bathroom mirror.

I use newspapers to clean my windows and also to line my plant beds under mulch to keep away garden pests. Coffee grounds are great to mix with potting soil. Use only half the suggested amount of liquid laundry soap when doing your laundry. Any more will only build up in your clothes anyway. Same for fabric softener.

When using a debit card for cash NEVER use an ATM machine that is not your bank’s. You will pay your bank and the other bank an additional fee. Instead, go to a store that allows you cash back on a purchase. A pack of gum cost a lot less that the $3-$5 in fees you’d have to pay.

don’t flush the toiletbowl with one urination, flushing a toilet requires approximately 3 Liters of water.

If you have a ref, dont buy a hot & cold dispenser, but if have bought already just turn on the switch when lots of people are drinking the water like during parties.

Mary

How do you stop bacteria from building up even faster? I don’t want to use cleaning supplies twice as much. I will not live with a dirty toilet in my house!

katrina lark

To clean that hard to get off dirt and ring in your toilet bowl- use a pumice stone. It is wonderful at getting it off and it won’t scratch the porcelain. scrub away!

Plain White Vinegar is a great and cheap cleaner that helps keep bacteria down. Also, your toilet is not what you should worry about- it’s one of the cleanest places in your house. Worry more about your bed (under the sheets).

I have learned that if you can stand the taste of apple cider vinegar, it can be used for swishing and gargling. It brightens teeth and takes care of bad breath!! Dilute with water.
There are many other uses too!! Look online.

buy large bottles of everything and put in smaller ones, less expensive

I re-use my foaming soap bottles by diluting regular dish/hand soap . it works just as well and i buy soap every other month.
