“What’s that Smell?” - Eliminating Odors

(Rate this article)

Your apartment can retain a smell, bad or good, longer than a house will because an apartment usually has less ventilation. If you burn your popcorn, or discover a moldy, smelly “something” in the back of your fridge, don’t feel that you need to walk around with a clothes pin on your nose. Instead, eliminate the stink with these tips:

Microwave Mystery
To get rid of that penetrating food odor that greets you full-force every time you try to nuke something, follow these steps:

  • Unplug the microwave and unfasten the cabinet body using a screwdriver. Slide it back slightly to clear any internal brackets and then lift it off.
  • Clean the oven using a vacuum that has a crevice tool attachment. Vacuum the fan, all the internal parts and the vents on all sides of the chamber. Do not put your hands or any metal parts into the chamber as this can cause shock.
  • Reassemble the oven and plug it back in.
  • Fill a bowl with half water and half vinegar and microwave it on high for five minutes. The vinegar solution will loosen food particles so that you can easily wipe them out with a moist cloth or paper towel.

If the smell doesn’t go away, you may have burning electrical parts. This should be handled by a professional. Odds are, it might be less expensive to buy a new microwave rather than pay to have it repaired.

Pet Problems

  • If urine is the problem, use vinegar or a urine neutralizer that is available in most pet stores.
  • If the smell persists and/or is embedded in your walls, treat the area with a fast-drying sealer that can be bought at a home improvement store. This will contain the smell and keep the odors from spreading.
  • If you don’t have a pet and realize the smell is left over from a previous owner, contact your landlord. This way, you’re going on record stating that it didn’t come from you and your security deposit won’t be at risk.

Musty Aroma
A musty smell is caused by the microorganisms associated with moisture or air that is not being circulated. To eliminate the smell you need to find where the moisture is coming from. When you locate the moisture, use an antimicrobial spray to control or stop the growth of the microorganisms. Also try opening your windows wide on dry days to allow air to circulate.

I was surprised by the suggestions on this website to use “Febreeze” if a room smells ’sour.’ Febreeze is only masking what may be a more serious problem, such as mold, or, maybe a room just needs fresh air to air it out. Febreeze is comprised of toxic chemicals (like Glad plug-ins, little green pine trees that you hang from your rear view mirror in your car). These expose us to all kinds of poison, yep, that are considered to be neurologically damaging. Why not just open a window? Or…baking
soda? Never use a toxic chemical OVER a smell. It is both harmful to your health, and, simply masks what could be a deeper problem.

reply to Magdaline: if a house smells of mold, it DOES have mold spores, you just may not be able to see them. Mold lives everywhere, and thus, spores also live everywhere. The point, though, IS to find the source of the smell. Your instinct is excellent. Check the air ducts, as in, if it is in the ductwork, you’ll need to have someone come in who can take samples from inside them. I just went through this with my boyfriend’s workplace. Mold, like Febreeze, is toxic with ongoing exposure. Someone who knows mold should come in and do swabs and get them cultured. Ductwork is frequently where mold lives and it blows the, yep, spores (that can’t be seen) into a room.

You don’t have to SEE mold to have a problem with mold. My guess is that the mold smell is also in all their soft furniture and other fabrics, and could need to be tossed out, depending on the length/duration of the exposure.

Once a year I go to friends for Thanksgiving whose house is moldy. I come home and it’s like my clothes are drenched in it–they stink!

If you could help these older people find someone who remediates mold to do some testing, you’d be doing them (and yourself) a great service.

Anyone ever moved into a kitchen that smelled like skunk? It’s not really strong, and there clearly is no animal there, but the smell is skunky. What to do? I am on the 5th floor, so I doubt there is an animal in the walls. What else might smell like that? Thanks.

Sandie

Did you ever get any responses to your question…experiencing similar issues…not sure if its tha animals that reside there or mold/ mildew

We just started to move in a home, that my wife and I leased. My wife saw the house but i didn’t.When i walked in I started to have a reaction,my eye started to welt up and severe itching.we found out the owner had three cats in the home in which i’m allergic to cats.can anyone tell us if we have a complaint against the owner for not disclosing this to us

Through a Google search I came across this website and they have a great guide on how to eliminate your most common types of odors. It is called ‘The Complete Odor Elimination Guide’. Great step by step instructions. I don’t think it gets any easier than having instructions laid all out for you. I found it very helpful maybe you will too.
