Cleaning 101

(Rate this article)

We are all born, we all must die, we all must pay taxes and we all need to clean our homes (unless we like bugs and dirt). It is one of the most dreaded tasks and if you live alone, sometimes quite overwhelming. If you’re determined to get it done without the aid of a professional housekeeper, here are a couple tips to keep you organized and on track.

Preparation and Planning

Make lists - You’ll be working, perhaps going to school, keeping up with friends, and doing everything else you want to do before you start cleaning… The time that you’ll going to have for “chores” will be minimal. Keeping a list of the things you NEED to do, in priority order, helps keep you on track. If you create a checklist, each time a chore is completed, mark it out in big red pen, it’s a small thing, but when the entire list is done, you’ll feel like you really accomplished something (and you did!).

Prioritize – If you’re short on time, plan which things need to be done first. This may include taking out the trash (leaving that one go will cause odor problems), sweeping and washing windows and mirrors. Think about things that you need to do to keep sanitary (cleaning out the refrigerator) and things that will make the biggest impression (believe it or not, if you’re having guests over, cleaning your door will give the impression of a clean apartment!). A little dust isn’t that big of a deal, but pet hair bunnies living on your floor is a bit disgusting.

Communicate and agree with your roommate - If you have a roommate, BEFORE you move in together, decide who is going to do what tasks. Agree in writing if you have to. More arguments seem to take place over “who’s going to do the dishes” than from anything else. (Another tidbit that will keep harmony with your roommate is to always clean up after yourself. If you make the mess, you best be the one to take responsibility for it!)

Money - Set up a jar or bank to put your spare change. Cleaning supplies can add up to a substantial amount and isn’t usually figured into living expenses.

Clean often – It is much easier to climb a hill than climb a mountain. Cleaning the toilet isn’t the greatest thing to experience in life, but it IS MUCH easier to keep on top of it once a week rather than dealing with the mess that will build up over the course of a couple months. Remember what your mother always said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Plus, always looking in the back of your refrigerator will probably save you from some yucky surprises later. It’s the same for taking out the trash… There’s only so many odors that nice air freshener or incense will cover up. Some smells just don’t want to go away….

To keep a fresh smelling garbage disposal, cut a lemon in half squeeze it down the drain, then put the lemon in the drain…wait for about 10minutes then run water and disposal. No smells except fresh lemon and NO MESS!

Michelle

Thanks for this idea. My kitchen is only a few feet away from my front door and it smell horrible when neighbors come over.

Laura

Another idea to keep the garbage disposal clean is to add ice cubes to a lemon rind or orange rind. Grind it up. It really helps!

Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent mildew from forming in the first place. My shower has tile, of course, but the rest of the bathroom is drywall and it gets steamy, even with the bathroom window cracked, so by the end of the week, I have to wipe red mildew spots off my ceiling. Is there a product that’ll help prevent that?

Thanks,

William

to keep your kitchen garbage fresh -  sprinkle some carpet deoderizer on the bottom of the can before adding the plastic garbage liner! its an invisible air freshner.

ChristinaSmid

I love this! I’ve never had a problem with cleaning, but those tips that you gave at the bottom were terrific! Thanks so much!

ChristinaSmid

William- there’s something that they sell in walmart called damp rid. It sucks all the moisture out of the room and collects it in a bag or tray, depends on what you get. My grandmother was just showing it to me yesterday. The room that normally smelled like mildew and had mold on the walls and ceiling was fresh and clean! Note that you may need more than one bag or tray in the room. :0) I hope it helps!

For the mildew prevention in the bathroom, wipe down shower area with towel or rag dampened with bleach, after your shower/bath. Then blow a fan into the bathroom for 15 min. to completely dry the bathroom.

Tereese

Great tips. There were a few that I had never heard of. Also, placing a dryer sheet at the bottom of the trashcan helps to control odor.

Kay

For your car and computers, use New paintbrushes to clean the dash and cracks and crevices. Works great in corners of windows too.

i hate cleaning, im one of those people that put it off untill it backs up so bad you dont have a choice but to deal with it. my biggest problem is that when you live by yourself and you dont get company that often, its easy to do. i thought of a way to break that ugly cycle by reading these tips, also, break it up by day, a little something to add to your routine everyday helps to prevent you from being overwelmed.

Diana

Your tips are very helpful. I also use white vinegar, because I have animals

Jessica

ALL GOOD ADVICE:
Here’s a tip: after cleaning your kitchen sink and bathroom area, wipe all chrome off with rubbing alcohol. It disinfects, removes any residue from cleaners and shines your chrome like a new dime.

Just thought you’d want to know……….

I have older children and some times they forget that moms not as young as she use to be, I can’t move things around and so they fight because they don’t like chores this is great it helps keep them in order and gives me a break I love it!!!!!!!

Melanie

An answer to this question would be an answer to my prayers!!!

Thank you for the great tips. I am 20 yrs old and have many unclean roommates.  I need to find a solution to keeping my home clean!! These tips have helped out.  But, how do you keep a litter box from smelling the whole house up after the cat does her business?

Judy

I clean my two cat boxes each time I feed, twice a day. I put the used litter in a little bucket with a lid, lining the bucket with a plastic grocery sack. That contains the odor in the pail . Once or twice a week I discard the grocery sack in the trash can. You really can’t tell I have any cats.

Kristine

To clean a microwave:

In a microwave safe dish add about 1 cp of bottled lemon juice. Microwave. Wipe moisture off the walls and top of microwave, the grime will come with it!

Clean your house daily, pick after your mess and you will never be behind on your chores.

Rebecca

Great tips. I will definitely use some. But I have a family who does not help with the chores. My husband takes out the trash and thats it. My two young children give me a hard time about picking up their toys and games. Can any one help me out or give me some tips on how to get more help around the house? Thanks

Bonnie

Try a chore board for each child and let them know that there are choices and consequences, both good and bad.

Ali

Use a toothbrush to clean around your faucets- especially behind. They also work great in the crevices of your stove, the edge along the baseboard, just mark them cleaning!

How to clean miniblinds?

Bethany Biehle

Take the blinds down from the windows and put them in the bathtub filled with warm sudsy water (dish detergent works fine). Soak for a few minutes and then wash each blind with a sponge. You can lay them open on a carpeted (clean) floor to dry or carefully towel dry the top and hang back in the window to dry.

Melanie, you wrote:

Consider changing what you feed your cat. If your cat walks out of the box and you ask her what crawled up her butt and died, maybe it has to do with what your cat is eating. Ask your vet for suggestions.

The litter you use will determine in large part whether the smell goes away or lingers. I’m a big believer in Fresh Step scoopable, though it has a tendency to track, so use a litter mat if you use it.

Also, every now and then, rinse your litterbox with vinegar after dumping all the litter out and cleaning it.

Oh, and never use ammonia to clean a catbox. I don’t really recommend baking soda either, as both are basic (think back to chemistry) and leave the ammonia sitting there. Vinegar actually denatures the ammonia, ensuring that it’s gone for good. Using ammonia leaves the pee smell to linger and your cat will stop using the box because it smells like pee.

This is for you with kids and can’t get them to help pick there things up or they don’t like to do chores 1st make a chore chart start it out on a Sunday - Saturday write the chores down that you want done for that day at the end of the day if it’s done put a sticker on it if its not take something away from them (games, toys, bikes, outside time, friends ect… ) at the end of the week if all stckers then give them a treat ( money, movies, sleepover ect…) this works great for all ages my boys are 12,11,10 and this works great!!!!!! when they make a mess the pick it up if they dont it gets put in a bag the have 1 chance to earn it back if they don’t earn it back it goes to someone who will take care of it or in trash so the pretty much pick up all their things and rooms stay clean so does the bathroom (they don’t get anything if it is half-way done either i hope this helps it did with mine and some of my friends kids !!!!!!!

shelly

there is a cleaner called ‘awesome’,they sell it at dollar trees, and dollar stores,it is the best thing for miniblinds.spray it on,hose it off.there is no scrubbing to do !!!!

Hi, you never addressed the issue of painting the walls. I plan to stay fo quite awhile I and like it to look more like a house than an apartment. Painting, as you know is cheap, but not cheap when compared to moving again when you get evicted so what is your answer to this. I once painted an apartment and the manager came in and sat down and I could see she was really scoping the place out. After we had sat down she told me she wished I could make her unit have the feel as mine did. She never knew it was painted, it was just a very comfortable color. So, that’s my 2 cents worth, . Summary; is painting w/o management knowing or should I ask, offer an additional deposit, money talks loud there. I just find apt. white so cold and sterile. I can work with it but do not like it. My artworks best with a neutral color, many colors are as a greenish gray, neutral does not mean off-white. Let me hear the reply to this. Thanks, Keith S.

Miss Kitty

Keith,
I know that in my apartment complex we are allowed to paint the walls any color that we choose as long as when we move, you have to REPAINT everything back to the orignal apartment white. Same goes for hanging things and filling in holes before leaving too.
You might want to check with management BEFORE painting or you might get fined for making any wall color changes.
Good Luck ! :)

I NEED TO KNOW HOW CAN I GET RID OF PESKY GNATS THROUGHOUT MY APT, WITHOUT THE ADDED EXPENSE OF A PROFESSIONAL EXTERMINATOR, I’VE TRIED THE SHOT, AND THE RAID FOGGER, TO NO AVAIL, I TRY TO KEEP MY PLACE CLEAN, BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK, PLS GIVE ANY HELPFUL TIPS, THANKS.

Bonnie

Are you sure they are gnats or fruit flies? If they are fruit flies, try setting out shallow bowls of vinegar and liquid soap detergent. This is what we use and it seemed to work. Also, try vinegar and liquid soap down each drain (bathtub, bathroom sinks, kitchen sinks) and top with kosher salt. Works wonders.

Lindsey

hey Terry to the knats thing if you leave water in the sink, for even more than a couple of hours. Knats will come in from out of thin air, or at least that’s what it can seem like. I’ve noticed if you just at least rinse your dishes when you are done it avoids alot of trouble in cluding knats!

Robin

i have a cleaning service thats what i do for a living and i found some really cool ideas on here thanks! and keep me posted.

Lisa

Hi-I was having the same problem. I used the CLR bathroom cleaner. Worked great for me!

Bethany

The Tub&Tile cleaner by Melaleuca, Inc. (mail/web order) is AWESOME! It is citric acid based, takes soap scum and hard water stains off easilly, is non-toxic and very inexpensive. It arrives in a concentrate that you mix with water to make 4 spray-bottles of solution for $7.50. Preferred customers get 30% off.

Bonnie

Most grocery stores, and most automotive supply stores, even Target carries it now, carry a product called
“Simple Green”. I’ve used it for oil stains on the driveway, laundry and it’s my “best friend” for cleaning.

Lisa Jones

Hi-how do you clean glass shower doors. The doors always seem to have soap buildup on them! Thanks!

If you are planning on getting rid of alot of things there is a site called Craigslist.com that you can adverise items you want to rid of and make $$$ at the same time. Another option is a place called The Mustard Seed, they will take donations, to help familys in need of any household items. That is if your in the Orlando Fl. area, Two Men and a Truck are also a great moving service budget wise also.

I absolutely love this!!! I am a stay at hom mom with a 17 month old daughter that is full of energy and keeps me on my toes. She can make even the smallest messes that add up, not to mention the big ones!!! These tips help me organize my cleaning schedule and help me to make time for cleaning while i am watching her. I have invested in some “play cleaning tools” to include her in the cleaning and it REALLY REALLY helps!!!! It makes her fell as if she is helping mommy!!! Great tips guys!!! Keep them coming!!!

monique
