• Although it is not necessary, it’s always nice to give gifts to your direct reports. If you do decide to give gifts, make sure you give to all your direct reports and that the gifts are either the same thing or at least equal in value.
• Buying for the boss? Think twice. Unless you’re giving a gift that is from the entire department, an individual gift to your boss might be seen in a bad light by others in your department. Think “kiss up”.
• If you’ve got a lot of buddies in the office, try to organize a secret Santa in order to not let others feel left out. If your company won’t do one, and you still want to buy for some of your pals, give the gifts during off hours. Doing this will prevent others from feeling bad about not getting a gift from you.

For the Hard to Buy For
Everyone has someone on their holiday shopping list that is so difficult to buy for that you stay up nights thinking and wondering and trying to figure out the perfect gift. There really is an easier way to buy for the person who has everything….

• Ask your recipient if they have a wish list. If they don’t, suggest that they start one. Odds are you’re not the only person having difficulties buying for them.
• Be honest; tell them that you really want to get them something that they’re going to like. (Maybe you’ve been so off in the past that all of your gifts have been regifted!) The hard to buy for person will be flattered and will hopefully provide you with a little more direction in your gift selection.
