The Costs of Moving - A Quick Checklist

(Rate this article)

When you’re preparing to move, either into your first apartment, or just a new apartment, make sure you’re prepared financially by referring to this quick checklist.

The Old Lease - If you’re moving from one apartment to another, make sure you’ve fulfilled the terms of your old lease. If you move out early, you may be responsible for a reletting fee and/or the remainder of rent due on your lease.

Security Deposit - You’ll need to pay a security deposit. If you’re moving from one apartment to another, you may not get your old security deposit back in time, the amounts may be different, or you may only get a certain percentage of your deposit back. Make sure you have this money in the bank, just in case.

Utilities - If you are moving to a new town, or moving to a building that has different utility providers, you may need to pay deposits for things like electricity, phone or any utility not included in your rent. If you are changing phone numbers or getting a new phone line installed, you may need to pay additional set up charges for that.

Costs of Moving

  • Will you be hiring movers?
  • What will the packing materials cost?
  • Will you be renting a truck?
  • If you’re having friends help you, it is common courtesy to offer them lunch and refreshments, make sure you figure this into your costs of moving, especially if you have a lot of friends.
  • Meals (you won’t have your oven or microwave)
  • Cell phone calls.
  • Will you need to stay in a hotel in between apartments?

Pets

Pet Deposit – If you have a pet, your new apartment may require a special deposit for your animal. Make sure you ask about this, and if there is one, find out what has to be done to get that fee back, before you sign the lease.

During the Move – It’s probably not a good idea to have Tiger hanging around when you’re trying to move. There’s a good possibility that your pet may either get lost or get hurt. Don’t take a chance of this happening. Have a good friend watch your pet, or, kennel your pet for the day or days surrounding your move. If you will be kenneling your pet, consider that cost in your total moving budget. If a friend will be watching your pet, although it will be less expensive than a kennel, you should still buy a thank you gift.

Time – Sure, you’ll be spending a good deal of your time moving, but time is money. Think about the financial implications of taking time off of work as you pack and unpack.

i want to move in to an apartment but not to sure how you move in and what you need Can you help m me!!!

julz

you may have already moved but if not you need boxes and things to rap your breakables in. you need to hire movers or get your friends to help you carry and depending on how much stuff and furniture you are moving you will probably need a van, tailor or truck ( U haul rents all of these) moving companies often also have them for rent. if you hire movers check with them about packing materials tey may have spesiphics

Me any my boyfriend are about to move in together for the first time.  We both have jobs and I go to school but my only concern is that I’m worried about financial issues.  We are trying to save at lease 700-1000 dollars to move, we already have furtniture and a bedroom set, but I’m worried about the money issue to pay bills.  The rent is 550, we are going to split that and pay 225 each then our light bill is only 30 dollars.  Everything else is included.  But we also have other bills like the government and tickets and student loans.  So, is this the right time to actually move in with each other?

v

NEVER believe from the landlord/lady that your electric bill will only be 30 dollars. after living at some apartments in daytona, fl, i learned that the hard way. ALWAYS add at least 50 dollars to ANY totals they give you. Also, if they say something is included in the rent, go ahead and bump that figure up by a 100 dollars - corporate will either take it out of the security deposit or bill you directly. been there, done that.

Jodie

I totally agree. I like to ballpark my amounts and make sure I have way more than enough vs. too little.

gregory montrose

I think you both should look at the relationship that you share. And make sure you have enough money for your bills most of all make sure you want to be around this person and that you both are on the same page in the same book. because I’m in a similar situation it’s not working. I would like to hear from because I am looking for a place to rent in that price range and maybe you can pss on some helpful information. PEACE

jasmine

How many checks stubs do u have to have? Im in the same situation as u just try and see how it work out all u can do is try

larry

I’d say, you should probably try to save up at least $700-1000 for EACH of you. And that’s if you were not moving!! Maybe $5000 to move with a job already set up.

This will be the first time that I will have a place of my own. I really don’t know what to expect. I’m very excited though I wish I could have found me a room-mate though it would be more exciting. I am just waiting to see how much my bills will be every month. WISH ME LUCK!!!

Lydia

In response to the queestion regarding the cost of electricity. If your going to live with someone. Figure out what there habits in ref to leaving a bathrm lght on,etc. Than shop around for providers. Pick the bst one. Ill be moving soon. So that is my way of figuring out that expense. Jus be smart about it. Buy energy saving light bulbs, plugs, etc.

Dont forget to add the cost of closing your current contract. These fees can be thru the roof in most places. Our students find this out the hard way many times, and end up having to take out credit just to move… Rediculous in my opinion.

Diana

hey im 19 yrs old i have lived on my own since the day i turned 18! so to all of you who have questions… first you need to take a long time to see which apartments is fit for you! money is the biggest issue with this. you need to make sure you include cable (about$125 to be safe), electric (average for all 12 mo. $200/mo.), food ($200-$300 a mo.), cell/ home phone (you should know that) and any extras like car or insurance, water, or trash ect. if this is your first time i would DEFINATELY try to find someone to share ALL the responsabilities with. you also have to figure you need shampoo, conditioner, soap, paper towels, ect. so good luck and i hope this helped! :)

I am wondering where I can find such low rent for my 1st apartment? I live in Chesapeake Virginia and it is nearly impossible to find a decent apartment in a good area with rent less than $900. I have narrowed my choices down to two townhomes/apartments that have rent ranging from 1000 to 1326 per month. I will have a roommate and we both bring home around 800 to 1100 per month, but we have other financial obligations in addition to possibly paying rent. We are still young and don’t want to ruin our credit, but where can we find information about apartments that pay for utilities?

rhiannon

me and my friend are moving to cali we live in utah now and thhis will be our first apartment. we are going to stay with some of her family while we find an apartment. her dad is pretty welthy and gives her money alot and he will be sending us money i dont have quit as much money as her so she would pay for alot of the stuff i feel bad but she says its okay. should i let her buy more than me or is it wrong? she says she doesnt care but i do.

Shay

She says she does’t care but she really does. Don’t depend on her too much or she won’t come through for you when you really need her.
