Moving Without the Movers

(Rate this article)

You’ve decided to forgo the professional movers for the big move, eh? Well, you’re going to save some money but in order to still have friends after the move, you’ll have to be very organized and very grateful to those who give you a hand. Apartments.com has some tips to make the process a bit smoother. Moving doesn’t have to be a major pain if you follow some time-honored advice.

Take on your apartment move without the movers.

Get It Together

The first thing a self-mover should do is to clean out the old apartment. Start out at least a month in advance and go room by room. Sort out, clean out and throw out (or sell or donate) anything you don’t need or haven’t used in the past six months. At this time begin using up things like food and cleaning supplies. The less you have, the less you have to move.

You’ll also want to start collecting packing materials, so save newspapers, bubble wrap, tissue paper and boxes. When you go to the grocery store, ask for extra boxes or any other packing materials they may have on hand.

Get Ready to Pack

  • If you are packing on your own, start at least a week in advance so that you have plenty of time.
  • Start with items you won’t need in the next week and pack as neatly as you can.
  • Carefully wrap breakable items by putting a layer of packing material between each piece of glass.
  • Wipe off items with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt before you pack them. When you get to the kitchen, clean off your appliances and wash all dishes before packing. Use disposable utensils the last few days so that you don’t have to be packing at the last minute.
  • Pack lamps with their cords and tape together loose parts of multi-part items.
  • Don’t waste empty space: fill up garbage cans, luggage and duffle bags with clothing or other unbreakable items.
  • Protect upholstered items with plastic coverings..
  • While you pack, you may find lots of instructional guides, receipts and other important documents lying around. Get a file folder and put all your papers inside so that you can easily find them later.
  • Label each box so that you will know which room to put the boxes in when you get to your new home.
  • Securely tape the top of each box.
  • Remember to remove heavy items from furniture drawers and tape or tie the drawers closed.

Moving Day

By moving day, you should already know how you are going to transport your belongings. If you rented a truck, you’re still going to need people to help you move your things. Many people make the mistake of assuming that they will get free help on their moving day from big-muscled friends or a neighbor who owns a pick-up truck. It is very bad etiquette to ask someone to help you move without offering them some compensation. Even if the person offers to help for free, you should insist on paying them back in some way and providing food and drinks. Also, send a thank-you card a few days after your move to express your gratitude.

If you are moving out of an apartment, make sure you drop off your keys and arrange to receive your security deposit before leaving. If someone is helping you, you should be ready to show them where each piece of furniture and box goes.

Question, what if you are moving out on your own for the first time and are moving out of your room at your parent’s house, but are moving across country on a very tight budget and insist on having no moving help from anyone with no large pieces of furniture to move, then what.

Purge . . . get rid of anything and everything you don’t absolutely have to have once relocated. If your vehicle has room, pack it to the hilt. If not, since you’re moving across country rent the smallest U-Haul trailer you can manage. Make sure its enclosed. You may encounter bad weather along the way and you need to make sure your belongings remain dry. Good luck on your move.

I used DHL to move 27 boxes. They are cheaper than USPS, UPS, (average out to be about $0.5/pound. and they allow larger size boxes than UPS without extra charge. My boxes went from NJ to CA in 2-3 days.

Just make sure to tell them in advance how many boxes you have so they have a larger truck for the pick-up. And then call again to make sure they have that in the system.

Hello, I’m Dianah.
I’m movin gout on my own for the first time. I really cannot live at my mother’s house. I’m moving to indiana, but I was wondering how I can accomplish this on no budget. I have already thoguht of getting a temproary job, but my mother will just snatch my paycheck up and divy it up into sections like she does all the time. Say what I can spend and what I can’t. I haven’t even told her i’m moving out yet because I know she’ll try to scare me into not moving like she did last time. Can someone help me?

the best thing is to start off on an adult level and tell your parent/s in this way you are showing them that no matter what they do or say your going with or without their blessings.I’m sure they will respect you more for being a grown up then acting like a child in the long run. Good Luck

hi dianah
if you have a checking account, you can have your check directly deposited.ask if there is a feature where you can have a portion of that sent to a savings account so that you can begin to save for your moving exenses.your mother might be scaring you because she still sees you as her little girl and isnt ready to let go yet.talk to her and show her that you are a grown up and capable of making your own decisions, maybe she will ease up a little. good luck

Hi Dianah,

Unless you have a great job; I would go with what your mother says. She is thinking of your safety and if you can not afford an apartment in a safe neighbourhood, I would stay with your mom. She is not scaring you, she is just telling you the truth. Afterall, remember, mothers wont be around for ever, try to enjoy the time you have with her.

Hey guys, I am also i the same boat. I’ve lived on my own before, but I’ve never moved across the country to Colorado like im planning on doing this winter. I’ve got 4 months to save up enough to move, and then drive there in my car with all my belongings. Anything else I’ll probably have shipped to me by DHL like the guy above said. Thanks for the tip. anything else i should be concerned about?
