Reducing the Noise - Letters from Readers Answered
Dear Apartments.com,
I think I really made a big mistake. I had this party once and my upstairs neighbor complained about the noise that I was making. I wasn’t really nice about it and told her a couple things that I really regretted the next morning. Since then, she’s gone out of her way to make a lot of racket when I least like it. Early in the morning, late at night, when I have a girl over, the worst times ever. It seems as if she knows exactly when loud noise is really going to make me mad. I have no idea how she does it. But, since I was a real jerk to her, I don’t know how to go about fixing this one. I know, I really did a doozy.
Help Me in Hanover, MA
Dear Help Me,
You’re right, you shouldn’t have snapped at your neighbor. However, was she being rude to you when she complained about the party? A neighbor shouldn’t be rude when it comes to a one-time complaint, so she may be at fault as well. She’s obviously very upset to go far out of her way just to make your life more difficult. For this reason, use kindness to try and calm her down. Try to see things from her side. Invite her out for a drink or strike up a conversation with her in your parking area. Try to become her friend. Try to get to know her first and then bring up the situation. Apologize for your rudeness and explain that you didn’t mean to disturb her. Ask if there’s anything you can do to keep from disturbing her in the future. If you don’t see her in person, write it down in a letter and leave it at her door. Your kindness will most likely subdue her anger and get her to stop trying to make your life miserable. Next time, avoid this conflict by informing your neighbors when you plan on having a party, hey, why not invite them too! When people feel welcome, even if they can’t make the party, they are less likely to view it as an annoyance.
Dear Apartments.com,
Okay, I finally found the greatest apartment ever. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a place. Only, I have one HUGE problem. About a month after I moved in, a construction crew started leveling the nice park on the other side of my building. Since then, there’s always construction noise, late at night, early in the morning and on the weekends. There’s no rest for these people and I’m really mad because I can’t enjoy my free time in peace. Is there anything that can be done?
Crabby Construction in Cape Canaveral, FL
Dear Crabby Construction,
This is a difficult situation because the noise isn’t coming from your building. However, construction crews are usually limited by city law to certain hours of operation. Contact your local city hall and ask what the law is in your town. If the crew is breaking the law, report them. You won’t be reporting the crew members themselves but rather the boss who is controlling what hours they have to be on the site. If the crew is allowed to keep working, purchase a sound machine, loud fan or some earplugs. For your sake, I hope the construction project doesn’t last for the remainder of your lease.
