Finding a Pet That’s Right for You
If you’re set on adding a dog to your home, you’ll not only need to look at the size of your home and the time commitment you can make, but you’ll also need to research the characteristics of the breed/s that you are considering. You’re going to want to have a dog that compliments your lifestyle. If you’re a total couch potato, you’re not going to want a dog that is extremely active. If you have small children in the house, you’re probably not going to want a guard dog.
Things to ask yourself:
- How much time do you plan on dedicating to exercising your dog?
- Do you have allergies?
- Have you ever owned a dog before or will this be your first?
- Do you feel that you would be able to, or be comfortable with controlling a dominating dog?
- Do you want a dog that will not shed or are you ready to buy stock in lint rollers?
- What type of protection are you looking for in a dog? One that will only bark in warning or one that will defend your or your property if needed?
- Do you have the financial means to support your breed of choice? (A Yorkie will eat much much less than a Mastiff! Some breeds are also more susceptible to health problems that could result in major vet bills. More and more companies are now offering health insurance for pets, ask yours if they do!)
