Finding a Pet That’s Right for You

(Rate this article)

If you’re set on adding a dog to your home, you’ll not only need to look at the size of your home and the time commitment you can make, but you’ll also need to research the characteristics of the breed/s that you are considering. You’re going to want to have a dog that compliments your lifestyle. If you’re a total couch potato, you’re not going to want a dog that is extremely active. If you have small children in the house, you’re probably not going to want a guard dog.

Things to ask yourself:

  • How much time do you plan on dedicating to exercising your dog?
  • Do you have allergies?
  • Have you ever owned a dog before or will this be your first?
  • Do you feel that you would be able to, or be comfortable with controlling a dominating dog?
  • Do you want a dog that will not shed or are you ready to buy stock in lint rollers?
  • What type of protection are you looking for in a dog? One that will only bark in warning or one that will defend your or your property if needed?
  • Do you have the financial means to support your breed of choice? (A Yorkie will eat much much less than a Mastiff! Some breeds are also more susceptible to health problems that could result in major vet bills. More and more companies are now offering health insurance for pets, ask yours if they do!)

Read on for more specific information about each breed of dog.

Always buy mutts! Designer dogs even! They hardly ever have health problems because of the way they’re bred. For instance, if you want a pug but don’t want their snorting and nose and eye issues, go for a puggle. (pug beagle mix) They have a longer nose and since their eyes don’t bulge as much they don’t get the eye problems regular pugs do!

I have two boys, almost five and two. I was curious on what type of dog would be good to have? They are really “rough” on animals- the boys are used to my parents big labs. Does anyone know of a website or something that could point me in the right direction? Thanks.

The beagles dogs are very good to small children. They are very patients and loyal.
