Pet Problems Solved!
Dear Apartments.com,
I found the cutest little apartment in the world, with plenty of space and right within my budget. I was ecstatic when I walked around the neighborhood and saw a big park just a few blocks away. My dog Oscar would have a great time there! Then I signed my lease and saw these horrible words written on it: NO DOGS ALLOWED. Is there anything I can do to convince my landlord that Oscar is a wonderful dog, completely trained and super friendly? Giving up Oscar is not an option.
Sincerely,
Disappointed in Denver, CO
Dear Disappointed,
Ouch, you sure did get yourself in a doozy of a situation didn’t you? I’m sure you’re slapping yourself over this but I’m going to take the liberty to use you as an example of why it is so important to READ YOUR LEASE AGREEMENT before you sign it. I hate to break it to you but the odds of you talking your landlord into letting your dog into the building are slim to none. Think about it this way, people move into buildings that do not allow dogs because they don’t want to deal with the barking, poop or other messes that a dog might make. It’s not only your landlord that you would need to talk into allowing Oscar in; it would also be everyone else in the building. There might be some other people in your building that have wanted to bring an animal in at one point but because of the regulations in the building, they were not allowed either. You can see the un-fairness of the situation. Since getting rid of your pet is not an option, and I do applaud you for that, you’re going to need to explain the situation to the building manager openly and honestly. Depending on your stage in the moving process, if you haven’t moved your things in yet, you might be able to break your lease if you’re dealing with an understanding person. However, be prepared to pay a fee as most buildings have policies about that too. And I repeat, READ YOUR LEASE AGREEMENT to find out what you will be accountable for. The next time you’re looking for an apartment, select “pets” under the amenities search buttons on Apartments.com and you’ll be able to see only those apartments that will allow Oscar to live with you.
