How about greyhounds? With all the greyhounds being ‘rescued’ from tracks and as breeder ‘rejects’ it would be a nice addition to this site.

Kristian

It would be nice if you all could put just a plain pit bull in there.i mean they arent all mean like everyone seems to think.i have one and i have a young child.my pit bull never bothers with her.so i think it would be a nice addition to this site.

rose

American pit bulls are plain pit bulls just to let u know and they are great family dogs, i do agree.

Apartments.com

Kristian,

The American Pit Bull Terrier is listed on this breed list, second from the top.

Thanks for reading Apartment Living!

shadia

i have to say that your site was rather helpful although you could use a different approach as to how you show people the features of a dog eg : grooming 4 paws etc..
otherwise you have a very helpful site

Jackie

Just want to make people more aware of Schipperke’s. They are great dogs, great apartment dwellers, loyal with good personalities and great with kids.
This breed is never mentioned, and many people are not familiar with this breed.
Check them out on the internet.

jackie

jackie,
my name is jackie,also.
i have a schip and would like to hear from you.
they are great dogs.

Jennifer

If getting a Schip puppy, how often do they need to go out during the day? I’d be working but can get friends & family who live nearby to stop & walk the dog, or get a service. I’d also be crate training the pup until they stop teething.

alva

i dont no what kind of puppy to get i have cats and guinea pigs and a medium sized garden which a dog could escape from does anyone have any sugestions??

sarah

fix your fence or expect the dog to run away. But if you’re gonna get one anyway…I recommend a labrador, golden retriever, austrian shppard, german sheppard, or maybe a beagle. They tend to be the smartest dogs that don’t run off and are fun to walk. Plus they will get along with your cat. They aren’t alpha personality dogs. They are also very easy to train and if thy do get out, they will come right back

annie

Sarah’s has some good recommendations. Adding to that…All dogs need daily physical exersize with you. If you plan on getting a dog consider what they are bred for. The working, herding, and sporting breeds are EXTREMELY energetic dogs. The specific breeds are bred to do work. If you don’t plan on making the time to spend with them, they’ll tend to be biter, diggers, howlers and barkers. This applies to the small dogs too. You need to walk and spend time with them.
Otherwise you’ll create snappy, yappy, toe biters

Robyn

A Schipperke is a good dog to own. They are maverlous with cats and children of any age and any life-style. They do well in any size of garden. I used to own one with a unfenced yard and he was properly trained and didn’t require a leash or chain to keep him in the yard.

Kathy

Looking for a family dog. We are on the go quite a bit. We live on a busy street and need a dog that will be very easy to train. We havent had very good luck in the past. We had a lab male for many years but he liked to chew his way out of the yard. We have also had a male boardercollie mixed with beagle and this dog was very sneaky and darted out the door and played chicken with cars. We would love to have a dog that could be mellow in the evening, hang out by the fire, be gentle with kids and very easy to train. We don’t want a small dog and possibly one that isn’t terible about shedding. Can you help our family?

stacy

kathy…Poodles are known for their obidience and are recommended for people with allergies to dogs. minimal shedders. poodles range from sizes of standard (large) mini (medium) toy (small).
they are AMAZING DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadie

I agree with you to, about the standard Poodle, they are excellent well behaved animals, however that does also depend on the person they live with if they take the time to spend time with them. It is the same for any DOG. They are very smart and they DO NOT SHED AT ALL. They do need up keep and that can get a little costly but just think the less vacuuming you have to do, or role the hair off from your clothe. There are lots of mobile units that come right to you and will do the grooming at your front door.

Steph

You should include information about the papillon!

Allison

Standard poodles are among the best family or single-person dogs you will find. They have no dander, do not shed, are among the most intelligent of all breeds, and are incredibly trainable but not overly demanding. They are sensitive, affectionate, attentive, gentle, active, and eager to please. In addition, they bond incredibly to one or two people but do not become aggressive easily; still, they are defensive and intimidating enough to make you feel safe with a big dog. They are excellent with children and great for small indoor homes, since they do not tend to bounce around, slobber, bark excessively, break things, or chew and destroy your property. The small version of this breed has given it a bad rap (miniature and toy poodles are generally overbred, ill-tempered, and ugly compared to the standard of the breed, which is where the small ones originated–not the other way around). I recommend standard poodles to absolutely everyone. Just be sure to find a reputable breeder, as no one wants an ill-bred animal.

pumpmkin

Also, budget for grooming every 4-6-weeks

Jacquie

You should include something about Mini Doberman Pinschers.

ginger

WHAT ABOUT THOSE MIN PINS, I HAVE ONE AND LOVE IT. GREAT WATCH DOG AND VERY LOVING. BIG ATTITUDE.

Danna

How about something on Bernese Mountain Dogs, Australian Shepard, Border Collies.
Thank you!

No Big Dogs

Danna… Are you serious???? Unless you’re living in a 10,000 square foot apartment with access to a fenced in yard, don’t even think of these kind of dogs in an apartment. They’re all herding/working dogs and they’re huge! I’m sure you’d give them great attention and care, but if you’re not home with them during they day, they’ll go stir crazy. Poor dogs.. They’re gorgegous but just not for apartments.

terry

i have a st.beranard that would be perfect appt. dog

Michelle

I think ALL of these dogs are good with the right love and care these dogs can be just lik my moms pit bull and like both my american bulldog…Sweet, Loving and better with kids than any small dog would!!!

you should add somthing about siberian huskys

i love dogs but HATE cats

Bess

Cats rule, dogs drool!

Tammy

I have been looking for a rental property recently. I am amazed at the reaction I have gotten when I mention my dog is a doberman. He is the most lovable, well mannered dog I have ever owned, and I have had everthing from a jack russel, german shephards, eskimo spitz. People need to be educated on dog breeds.

Alice

You should add something about Miniature Pinschers.I have 2 of them both males. One is 12 years and the other is 7years. I also have a Maltese that is 7 I think. She was a stray we found in the street.
Tammy I know what you are going through with your Dobie. I went throught the same thing before I got married my Dobie was a red one. She was so loyal and really protected me.

Reanee'

An Italian Greyhound is a good apartment dweller but they should not be brought into a home with children - they are better for people who live alone and are not at work for many hours a day.

Stacy

What about poodles??? from toy to standard. standards and mini’s need more outdoor exersice but they are GREAT apartment pets!!!!!!
i have a toy, we walk regularly. but if there is a day we can’t he’s still ok with it!!!!

Contrary to what the artical mentions, American Pit Bull Terriers and simmilar dogs (Staffordshire Terriers, etc) do not make good guard dogs. “Pit bulls” are too friendly and do not usually bark at strangers. For more information on the breed, visit the url above.

Jen

Amber, couple things, you can’t stereotype a breed just because you’ve had experience with one dog. Pit Bulls, by nature, are guard dogs, so even if you’ve been around a friendly one, that doesn’t mean they’re all friendly. Also, the Staffordshire Terrier is not a similar dog to the American Pit Bull Terrier, its the SAME dog. Pit Bull is a slang name derived from dog fighting in pits. The Staffordshire Terrier originated in England and was brought to the US and bred for its strength and tenacity.

Annie

The best place to find history for this breed, all breeds really, is the American Kennel Club. They are the ones who set the standards based on the breeds history. Since they have a website, you can find alot about any breed. Their whole purpose is to keep the standards of all breeds as close to the original as possible. .

Morgan

Jen , American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers are not the same dogs . The Staffordshire Terrier is more bulky and has alittle more structure than APBT’s . And there nature is not guarding rottweilers and german shepeards were meant for guarding . American Pit Bull Terrier were have said to be ” fighting dogs ” . They’re not normally aggressive towards humans but can be aggressive with other animals if not properly socialized the right way .If socialized and trained the right way the American Pit Bull Terrier can be a awesome pet for a family w/ children or just a ordinary couple.

Jen

Morgan.. Same dog. http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/americanpitbullterrier.html

Every type of dog can be trained to behave properly, however, the pit bull was not “said” to be a fighting dog, they were bred since the 1800’s to fight. Fact. “American breeders increased his weight and gave him a more powerful head. A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they were originally bred to be a fighting dog.”

I owned pitbulls for over 20 years and since every dog is different, like every person is different, you can not say for a fact that they are not guard dogs. Try coming to my house.

Teresa

Pit Bulls are getting a bad rap, they should be listed as well. They are not mean dogs, they are trained by poor owners to be mean. It’s not the DOG it’s the OWNER! People need to know this instead of keeping their heads in the sand!

Faye Parker

I have was raised with bulldogs, they are very loyal. People need to stop giving them a bad name. It is all in the training.

I have a 8 year old Yorkie and she love’s everyone, including, small children and men. If I’m ill she stays close by me me, rarely leaving my side. It took her a while to get used to our move, especially having to leave her sister, whom she been with since birth, behind. Prior to our move they were fenced in and wasn’t around other around other animals often. And now that she’s not, I’ve been having a problem with her tring to eat other animal fesus. Is this common with dogs? And, can you tell me how to break her of this nasty habit? Fortunatlly I’m able to catch her most of the time and the vet said it won’t hurt her

Annie

Sometimes, if the food they eat is human, it smell good to them and they go back for 2nds. I also heard a smell amount of pineapple comes ou smelling so bad they aren’t tempted. check with your vet to make sure they can handle the acidity

Kate

heads up…you will have a hard time finding an apartment if you have a pit bull. they are restricted almost everywhere. i understand that they can be sweet dogs, but they have a tendency to ’snap,’ when least expected, and that’s a huge liability to an apartment community.

TammyJ

no one has even mentioned the corgi. we currently have a Chow/Akita/Husky mix that we have to give up because he is sooo big…he was raised by corgis…small in stature but big in personality. they only get to about twenty five pounds unless you feed them pizza…

Robyn

I have alot to mention. Pitbulls are aggressive dogs. I’ve seen mean AND nice ones and the nice ones turned mean if you approached their owner in anyway but flying. Rott’s tend to be too aggressive and will snap a person’s throat. German Shepards are normally loyal Protective Guard dogs but are in the same boat as the Rott’s. Poodles no matter what size are for single people who dont expect children, due to a very jealous nature. Akita’s are wonderful dogs but need a large yard. Schipperke’s are a personal favorite of mine but tend to be too protective if abused by previous owners.

melody

Have you ever had a rottweiler or a german shepard or a pit bull yourself, rather than post a comment about what you THINK you know about dog breeds, own one first. I have a rottweiler and she’s a big baby. You can put your face in hers and she would acknowlegde affection before invasion of private space. My dog probably is more obedient than your kid. Thanks for contributing to the bad name rotts, german shepards, and all the other breeds you obviously dont know anything about.

Robyn

Corgi’s are wonderful dogs, so I agree with you there TammyJ. Greyhounds are okay apartment dogs, As long as you can walk them 3 times a day for an hour each time, otherwise they’ll get bored and tear up your residence and they dont bode will with small animals since they are a sight-hunting breed. Standford and American Pitbulls are the exact same breed, just bred in different countries. Yorkie’s are Yapping dogs and dont bode well in apartments. The perfect dog is a Eskimo bred with Schipperke or Pomerian, they make great apartment companions and are great with children and various animals.

Lizz

The Welsh Corgi (Pembroke or Cardigan) is a great apartment dog, as long as you have the time to take them to parks every other day or so, and walk them for at least 20min. daily. They are very loving, great with other dogs/animals/small children. Difficult to train, highly intelligant, fun loving- overall- great pets.

Alicia

What about schnauzers, boston terriers, basset hounds, king charles spaniels, and mixed breeds. I’ve encountered many breeds when I go to shelters and most can be friendly but sometimes bite or growl when scared.

Anyway, if you are going to adopt a dog, adopt from shelters. You can find many good dogs in there ready to go home. Just proper training and socializing will make them good dogs. Most breeders are expensive and/or maybe back yard breeders or puppy mills. So the best place to get any cat or dog is at the shelter. They would spay/neuter them and give first shots.

Jennifer

I love the Schipperke, adore its big dog, little body attitude & hardiness while still being a smaller dog that I can keep in an apartment. Question on Schip puppies & apartments. How often do they need to be taken out? What is the max time they can spend in a crate during the day? I can work with any requirements, just would love to know your recommendations!

Teri

I’ve lived in a 2 bdrm apartment w/a Border Collie for the last 7 months. She was my (adult) son’s puppy & he couldn’t bear to part with her when he got posted to Iraq, so I was the only solution.

BCs are such bright, intelligent dogs. It didn’t take her long to accommodate herself to her new surroundings. There’s no yard, but there’s a dog park 1/2 block away & we do 20 min am & pm walks. A dogwalker gives her a walk early afternoons, too. At night, I play throw-&-fetch for hours, which is a-ok w/me. Weekends we visit a friend’s farm for some free romps.

Yes, it’s extra work having her in an apt, but so worth it.
