Roommate Problems Solved – Letters from Readers Answered
Dear Apartments.com,
My roommate stinks. I mean, really, she’s got terrible BO. When we first moved in, I thought there was something wrong with the apartment and I had the landlord check all over the place to see if there was something rotting. Needless to say, nothing was found. About a week later, I was sitting at the kitchen table when my roommate walked past me and I smelled it again. It’s bad, like stinky cheese. How do you tell your roommate that she smells? I thought I did all the important checks before I picked her as a roommate but I guess I didn’t ask to smell her armpits!!!
What am I supposed to do now?
Gassed Out in Gainesville, FL
Dear Gassed Out,
This is a very touchy subject and you need to approach it with caution. First, consider that your roommate may be on a medication that is causing the odor. You could breech this topic gently by starting up a conversation about things you want her to know about you and mentioning a medication you were or are currently taking (make it up if you have to). Tell her that it sometimes causes you to have to take extra showers because of its effects on your body. This may alert her to her own problem. If she doesn’t change her hygiene habits in the next few days you need to move on to being direct. Tell her that you’ve noticed a problem and were concerned. Express that this is not easy for you to say so that she knows you’re not trying to upset her. It may result in a sour reaction, but in time, your roommate will hopefully understand that you weren’t making fun of her and you can both have a “fresh” start.
