How to Escape a Dangerous Situation

(Rate this article)

No matter how careful you are, you never know when you might find yourself in a dangerous situation. Crimes and accidents happen when you least expect them. Although you never know exactly how you’ll react in a dangerous situation, you can prepare yourself by learning the correct steps to get out of, and survive, the situation. Below find advice for coping in situations we hope never happen to you.

Armed Robbery
If you are on the street, in a parking lot or in the corridor of a building and are confronted by someone with a weapon who wants to rob you, you should:

  • NEVER resist. Give the robber anything they ask for.
  • Avoid making any sudden moves or reach for anything out of the sight of the robber.
  • Never ask the robber to prove he/she has a weapon in their pocket.
  • Don’t try to be a hero and attempt to apprehending the criminal.
  • If you think your life is in danger, talk about yourself and your family so that the criminal sees you as a real person and not just a victim.
  • Get to a safe location as soon as the robber has left and call the police.

Home Fire
If you are home and your detectors are going off, or if you see smoke or fire, here’s an action plan:

  • Do not panic.
Get out! Grab your children and pets and yell to other adults to alarm them. Don’t try to gather up your belongings.

  • If you were in bed or sitting, roll to the floor and crawl out of the building. Get out as quickly as possible.

  • If you need to go through a door, feel it first to see if it is hot. If it is, you need to find another way out. If your only other option is to jump out a window, jump. If you attempt to leave your home through smoke filled rooms, there’s a good chance the smoke will choke you and leave you unconscious in a burning building. Not good.

  • Call the fire department as soon as you are safely out of the building.

  • If you are in apartment and the building smoke detector did not go off, pull it as you exit and yell “Fire!” to warn others.

Being Followed
If you sense or see that someone is following you on the street or up to your apartment, you should:

  • Cross the street and see if the person follows. Always follow your intuition in these types of situations.

What about escaping from second hand cigarette smoke? A neighbor moved in recently and his cigarette smoke is traveling into my unit. So far the management has not been very quick to correct the situation. My strong preference is to have this fixed now for the sake of comfort and health.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice,
but,as Brad said on Feb.17,07,what is
being done for non-smokers?I have this
problem now,and seems like nothing can be done. This is just a shame, why should
i and others suffer because of bad habits of others.I have bad allergic
reaction,to cigarette smoke.Now i’m
searching for a smoke free apt.

I had to deal with that problem. Tell the management that they have until __ to fix the problem. If it is not fixed by then (make sure the warning is in writing!!) you can then take them to court. Let them know that you are willing to do this. They usually will do ANYTHING to avoid court. Once your case is won, they may be responsible for court costs, fixing the problem, do not get rent (it’s paid to the court) AND can be liable for any permanent health damage. In my case, they released me from my lease.

I need to know what to do about smokers. They go out on their patio and start smoking and my kitchen window is right their by their patio the smoke comes in (I am not a smoker) I can’t even go out and enjoy my patio because of this. I have put a fan on the out side of my window and turn it on every time the light up and I have to take some Lysol spray and spray it toward their patio. I can not afford to move. They are aware of what is happening and they have a 1year old little boy that is their with them. I need some suggestions. The people that live their are the managers son and daughter-in-law.

How do I deal with secondhand smoke I’m not sure of? The neighbor on one side of me smokes but he is never hardly home. There is no one on the other side, no one above, so it must be from directly below me. The guy lives alone, never opens his door or curtains, even locks his screen door making it very hard for me to knock and speak with him or leave a note. But someone is smoking and it’s awful. I’ve suffered from bouts of asthma and other respiratory stuff. I just don’t know what to do. My whole apt stinks. This is supposed to be a smoke-free bldg but how the heck can they enforce that when not sure of the culprit?
