How to Survive a Natural Disaster
Floods
If a flood evacuation is ordered or advised:
- Have cash, a full tank of gas, a battery-powered radio and an emergency kit on hand (use the list above for earthquake kits).
- Call your emergency contact person to report your plans.
- Keep children and pets indoors.
- Turn off all your utilities and lock your windows and doors before leaving.
Flash floods usually occur with little or no warning. Here is what to do if you find yourself in the middle of a flash flood.
- It does not have to be raining for a flash flood to occur. If you do suspect one is about to happen seek higher ground immediately.
- Do not attempt to walk or drive through flood waters. Take the clear path away from the water.
- If your vehicle stalls, immediately get out and walk to higher ground
