Top Six Guidelines for Window Box Gardening
5: The right soil is key.
Window boxes will not do well with ordinary garden soil. To keep your window box healthy use garden media, which is just a combination of several types of growing materials. “Soil-less media” is the best because it is lightweight and is most likely to be insect and disease free. This is a mixture of peat moss and other organic materials that will not dry out quickly and can be purchased pre-mixed at most garden centers. It is also a good idea to mix in a water-soluble or slow-release fertilizer with the media. A slow-release type will last 3-4 months, while a water-soluble one needs to be added on a weekly- or bi-weekly basis.
6: Don’t ignore your window box.
During the hot summer months, consistent watering is the key to keeping your window box garden healthy. If the window box is in direct sunlight, water twice a day until water runs through the drainage holes. Remove dead and decaying leaves, stems and flowers on a regular basis. Most importantly, enjoy your beautiful creation! Window boxes enhance the look of your building both from the inside and the outside. When the first frost comes, empty out the box, clean it out with water and store it for next year. Your new spring tradition has begun!
