Obscure Holidays
April 16-National Stress Awareness Day: This day was created in 1992 with the public’s health in mind. Are you aware of your stress level? Feeling jittery and agitated of late? If you’re stressed, take steps to reduce it today. Relax, will you?!?
May 6-No Diet Day: This day was not created to make you fat but rather to help you appreciate your body and learn to accept it. A British woman who had suffered from anorexia established the day for this reason. If you already like yourself, feel free to use this day to consume massive amounts of French fries, ice cream and chocolate.
June 23-Take Your Dog to Work Day: We’re not sure what you’ll do with your pet once you get there but perhaps your dog will enjoy the day. It was established in 1996 by Pet Sitters International. The point is to keep your dog (or other pet) involved in your life, so if taking it to work isn’t feasible, try going for a special walk.
July 2-World UFO Day: On this day in 1947 a metallic object landed on a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico. If you believe in UFO’s, you already know the importance of this day. Either way, keep your eyes peeled for anything strange flying through the sky.
July 13-Embrace Your Geekness Day: Today, don’t be ashamed of your high-level intellect or tendency toward technical expertise. Embrace your geeky side and be proud of it.
First Sunday of August-International Forgiveness Day: Forgive the person who shoved you as you got on the train. Forgive that person that cuts you off in traffic. Forgive your boss for not giving you a raise. The point is, today is for forgiving and moving on. The World Forgiveness Alliance created this day as a non-religious day of reconciliation for people all over the world.
August 26-Women’s Equality Day: Congress established this day in 1971. Use it to appreciate the rights women have earned or get involved in a group or cause that promotes women’s rights.
September 16-Step Family Day: All families are beautiful and this holiday celebrates a family with a stepfather, stepmother, stepchildren and/or step-siblings. The suggested way to celebrate is with a picnic but any family activity that you all enjoy will help celebrate your special family.
September 28-National Good Neighbor Day: Several presidents have recognized this day which celebrates the helpful and friendly people in your neighborhood. Some let you borrow a cup of sugar, others watch your house when you’re on vacation and some become your closest friends. Give them a little card today to thank them for being good neighbors.
